The Down To Earth Organic shop began as a small venture when Suzanne Bristow, with two small children, began to run an organic box scheme from her home. Having been brought up on home grown food, Suzanne knew good vegetables, and so she set about trying to make them more accessible for people whilst being able to work from home. Her home soon became taken over by sacks of potatoes and carrots! The box scheme customers praised her boxes and the numbers grew. Her mother Pam, aka Nanny Pam of the Jam, was soon called in to help. Meanwhile a box customer set about encouraging Suzanne to open up a shop, and had found the perfect location! Suzanne never set out to start a shop, she says it all just grew ‘organically’ as she went with the flow. The shop was started with money that had been being saved for a family holiday (one day they will get to go on it!) and so the Down To Earth as we know it was born.

At that time, as some customers will no doubt remember, the shelves still had some spaces on them, unbelievable though it may seem if you see the shop now! As customers relished the fresh vegetables and fruit, bread, milk and cheese, ice-cream, the meat and eggs from Elmhurst Farm, more products were also requested and so the shelves filled…and filled! From vegan, dairy-free, wheat and gluten-free products to wild game and sustainably fished tinned fish. Though we struggle for shelf space, we still try to honour any customer requests if possible!

This is currently the original ‘front shop’. We have all the usual whole foods that you’d expect from an organic shop and more. All products are organic when possible and a good range are fair trade. Please phone if in doubt and check the availability of the produce you would like.

Fruit and Vegetables: prices and availability will change week by week according to the season and other factors. Our aim is to provide you with the freshest variety for the best price, whilst trying to support local and British agriculture. All of our fresh produce is certified organic unless otherwise stated - occasionally we sell uncertified homegrown cooking apples, labelled as such. If you live in or near the Coventry area why don’t you give us a ring and try our £10 box, no obligation to have it again unless you want to, and we deliver for free!

Frozen Meat and Fish: sourced locally at Elmhurst Farm in Withybrook and Graig Farm in Wales. In addition to the organic meats we also sell some ‘wild’ meats such as game and fish, and organically farmed salmon.
We also sell organic turkeys at Christmas (advanced orders only.) Non-organic free-range turkeys fed on an additive-free diet are also available.

Dairy: we have cows' milk and we can get frozen goats' and sheep's milk too as well as yogurt, cream and lots of different types of yummy cheeses!

Alternatives to Dairy: Soya milk, Rice milk, Nut milk, Oat milk, vegetable spreads, soya cheeses, soya yogurts (e.g. Yofu)

Wheat-free: Rye breads, spelt breads, rye crackers and flapjacks as well as a range of flours. Spelt bread or sprouted bread may be tolerated by some people with a wheat intolerance.

Wheat and Gluten-free: We have a range of flours from soya to rice flour, different breads (please order in advance), pastas, cakes, biscuits, rice cakes, pizzas, lasagne, Christmas Pudding.

Vegetarian and Vegan: burgers, sausages, rashers, mince, Worcester Sauce, mayo, pestos, Sweets (jelly bears and cola bottles - gelatine free), Egg replacers….
