Established in 1974, Artist Blacksmiths, P. Johnson & Company is a family partnership based at Ratho Byres Forge, near Edinburgh, Scotland. Phil Johnson, founder and Eminent Master Blacksmith, heads the team with son, Mike Johnson, daughter, Shona Johnson and son-in-law, Pete Hill. All four partners are accomplished artist blacksmiths each bringing a little extra to the team: leadership, forging, engineering, design, communication and marketing skills. The partners are complemented by designer Jois Hunter, who turns ideas into sketches, detailed drawings and models, contributing much to the success and achievements of the business. Mike’s wife, Sandy Johnson, ensures the smooth running of the office and accounts and a further six blacksmiths are employed in the forge. The progressive approach developed at Ratho Byres Forge combines metal working techniques from ancient times, contemporary design and the innovative use of modern technology. All these factors give the forged metalwork a recognisable style and a reputation for quality which is second to none in Scotland. The work, both functional and sculptural, has won many prestigious awards. It has been sold and exhibited throughout the UK, Europe and North America and can be discovered in many homes and public spaces in towns and cities throughout Scotland and the rest of the UK.
